BOONE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Legends, a social event space that was often considered a nightclub on Appalachian State University’s campus, is set to be demolished following damage due to Helene.
The building for Legends used to be a grocery store when it was originally built in the 1960s. Decades later, it was bought by the university and turned into an event space.
Legends officially closed in 2023 due to structural issues, according to university officials.
Flooding and a sinkhole below the building’s entrance led to the ultimate decision, made last week, to demolish the building.
“Helene just exacerbated the issue on a number of fronts,” said Jeff Cathey, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at Appalachian State University.
Cathey noted the acts that have come through Legends, which included Jimmy Fallon, the Dave Matthews Band, and Doja Cat.
“It’s a building that has lived an amazing life and full of so many memories,” he said.
University officials noted they have no official timeline yet for demolition, or plans for the property once the demolition is completed.
