WEST HARTFORD. ~ Tuesday evening about 5 o’clock, police were pursuing a stolen vehicle down New Britain Avenue when trouble started. Police say a West Hartford officer shot and killed a man who attempted to steal his car while the officer was still inside it on Tuesday night. According to Chief Vernon Riddick, a stolen car drove east on New Britain Avenue after one officer used stop sticks near New Park Avenue.
Riddick claimed that after the stolen vehicle crashed, the two suspects fled on foot. He added that one suspect was apprehended after attempting to steal a vehicle from the Town Fair Tire on New Britain Avenue, while the other fled into a bay and battled with an employee.
The cop ordered the worker to get out of the way and then let his K9 loose on the suspect inside the car. According to Riddick, as soon as the officer stepped inside the car to take control of his K9, the suspect shifted into drive and took off. As the officer commanded the suspect to pull over, the vehicle collided with a police cruiser and another vehicle. According to Riddick, the cop fired shots at the suspect before the car smashed into a power pole.
According to Riddick, officers provided help and conducted CPR on the subject until paramedics came and took over. The hospital where the suspect later died. The police officer was also injured, suffering from a concussion and rib fractures, and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Neither the dead suspect nor the cop who shot him have been publicly identified by police. Lyle Solsbury, the suspect in jail, was identified by Chief Riddick. According to Riddick, Solsbury has been arrested more than 30 times and is a convicted felon. On Tuesday, Solsbury was arrested in West Hartford for auto theft, auto theft conspiracy, and interference. Both the Inspector General’s office and the state police are looking into the shooting.
