Peter Hofmann Obituary, Death – Peter A. Hofmann, 75, went away quietly at home on Monday, April 1, 2024. Arthur and Catherine Hofmann welcomed him into the world on October 28, 1948, in College Point, New York. They both passed away before him. He wed Mary Baumgartner, the love of his life, on June 26, 1993; she still lives in Elida.
Peter is also survived by his son, Joshua (Heather) Hofmann of Durango CO; his daughters Terra (Mark) McCrory of San Diego CA, Lisa (Jerry) Cowan of Carmel, IN and Nicole (Matt) Walker of Libertyville, IL; a brother, Raymond (Adele) Hofmann of Bellmore NY; 12 Grandchildren, Jared (Emily), Nicholas, Allison, Kylie, Alyssa, Michael, Emily, Kiya, Mikael, Julia, Jenna and Erica; brothers and sisters in law, Sharon (Dave) Moore of Columbus, OH, JoAnn (Larry) Troyer of Continental, OH, Janice (John) Freund of Ft. Jennings, OH, Bob (Carol) Baumgartner of Delphos, OH; numerous nieces and nephews, including Paul (Stephanie) Hofmann and Carol Jenks; and dear friends, including Tom and Laura Ring, Jack and Dian Staup, Dan and Sandy VonSossan.
Peter earned a Bachelor of Science from Brooklyn School of Pharmacy. Prior to taking on the role of General Manager at Public Service Marine/Harley Marine Services, he spent ten years working as a pharmacist. He was in charge of creating a Vapor Recovery System there. He served in the US Navy for eight tours and was awarded the Purple Heart during one of his tours in Vietnam.
He was always involved in church activities, serving as President of the Missions Committee at Zion and Trinity United Methodist Churches; a volunteer at the Delphos Postal Museum; a trustee at the Delphos Canal Museum, where he oversaw the setup of the train display; a Freemason, belonging to Hope Lodge 214; a Scottish Rite; a lifelong member of the VFW; and a member of the Teamsters Union.
Particularly when he took the grandchildren, Peter cherished the time he spent with his family. He had great pleasure in assembling trains in HO, G, and O gauge. Along with his wife Mary, he took lengthy trips across the United States and other countries, and he also enjoyed photography. Peter was a passionate chef. He was a huge admirer of Julia Child and would take any opportunity to prepare food for everyone. He was never without a cuisine that he enjoyed.
Friday’s funeral services will take place at Zion United Methodist Church in Elida at 11:00 a.m. On Thursday, the Harter & Schier Funeral Home in Delphos will be open for visitation from 2 to 8 p.m. Masonic services will begin at 7 p.m. The funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 15 at Dayton National Cemetery. In honor of his grandchildren, donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation may be made in lieu of flowers.
