CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A person was found dead during Mecklenburg County’s unsheltered homeless count that took place Thursday morning, county officials confirmed.
Mecklenburg County Community Support Services performed its local Point in Time Count amid the long stretch of freezing temperatures to determine the level of need for that population. The data they collect helps elected leaders make more informed choices around policy changes and funding decisions.
County officials said Friday that once the body was found, the survey teams contacted Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. The body’s location was not disclosed; CMPD is investigating the case.
The annual U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Point in Time count takes place on a single night in January and provides a snapshot of homelessness. Mecklenburg County says the key objectives are to estimate the number of people experiencing homelessness and to understand their demographic characteristics and living situations.
Anyone who notices a location where people may be living unsheltered is encouraged to submit that location to ServiceRequest.CharlotteNC.gov/service/Homeless.
