Paul Matvey Obituary – The identity of the man who tragically lost his life when a tree fell through a home on Sumner Street in Akron has been confirmed by the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office. The victim, Paul Matvey, was 33 years old and a resident of Akron.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at approximately 10:37 a.m. on Wednesday, following reports of a tree crashing into a house during a storm. The Akron Fire Department had to wait until the tree was cleared from the property before they could safely retrieve Matvey, who was located in the attic at the time.
To ensure the safety of the rescue operation, Barberton Tree Service spent a significant portion of Wednesday afternoon removing the fallen tree from the premises. Only after the tree was removed could authorities gain access to the building and reach Matvey. Initially, the home was deemed structurally unsound, with the risk of collapsing floors preventing crews from entering the attic. Fortunately, there were no other reported injuries resulting from the tree incident.
Following the departure of the tree company, the residence on Sumner Street was condemned and subsequently demolished, as confirmed by Barberton Tree Service President Lisa Devenport on Thursday. The fallen tree had also caused some damage to the neighboring house, but it was described as minor. The tree service had to remove foliage and wood from that property as well.
