CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The West Virginia Parkways Authority is advising motorists to prepare for heavy traffic along the West Virginia Turnpike during Memorial Day weekend, from Friday, May 23, through Monday, May 26, 2025.

Traffic is expected to peak on Friday and Monday, with a projected total of approximately 237,000 vehicles using the Turnpike over the four-day holiday weekend.

Officials urge travelers to plan accordingly to avoid delays.

Backups are especially likely at the Chelyan Toll Plaza heading northbound, where a bridge reconstruction project immediately following the plaza has reduced traffic to a single lane.

“We expect there’s going to be heavy traffic from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Monday, so make sure you schedule around that,” said West Virginia Parkways Authority Interim Director Parrish French.

Passenger vehicle tolls are $4.50 per plaza at the three main toll locations on the Turnpike.

Drivers looking for a more convenient option can purchase an E-ZPass for unlimited use at $27.50 per year, plus a one-time fee for the transponder.

E-ZPasses can be obtained or renewed online, through the WVPA E-ZPass mobile app, or in person at the West Virginia Parkways Authority E-ZPass Customer Service Center in Charleston (3310 Piedmont Road) or at the Beckley Customer Service Center (12 Pikeview Drive).
