Born on April 29, 2004, in Boston, Massachusetts, Owen was a bright, kind-hearted, and dedicated young man whose sudden loss leaves his family, friends, and the UMass community in mourning.
Owen was a junior majoring in Political Science, and he was passionate about making a difference in the world through advocacy and public service. He was a dedicated student, admired by his professors and peers for his intellectual curiosity, thoughtful insights, and commitment to justice and equality. His interest in politics and civic engagement reflected his deep care for social issues and his desire to create positive change in society.
Beyond academics, Owen was an active member of the UMass Amherst community. He participated in student government, several campus organizations, and was known for his leadership skills, kindness, and ability to bring people together. Owen was also deeply involved in volunteer work, lending his time and energy to causes that mattered most to him, including environmental sustainability and voting rights advocacy.
Owen had a love for adventure, enjoying hiking, biking, and spending time outdoors, particularly in the beautiful landscapes of Western Massachusetts. Owen is survived by his parents, David and Sarah Brownhill of Boston; his sister, Emily Brownhill of Amherst; his grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends who will forever cherish his memory.
A memorial service to celebrate Owen’s life will be held on September 20, 2024, at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Boston. The family will receive visitors during a wake on the evening of September 19, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the church.
