Officers Cameron Girvin,Christopher Reese Obituary, Death; – Two police officers in Virginia were tragically killed following a traffic stop on Friday night, according to officials. The individual responsible for their deaths is also deceased.
Officers Cameron Girvin and Christopher Reese of the Virginia Beach Police Department were declared dead at local hospitals early Saturday morning after being shot by a driver who brandished a firearm during a struggle outside the vehicle, as stated by Police Chief Paul Neudigate during a press conference on Saturday afternoon.
Neudigate referred to the officers as “two heroes who went to work last night and did not return home. Two heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our community.”
Officer Girvin, who had been with the department since 2020, and Officer Reese, who joined in 2022 after serving with the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office, were aged 25 and 30, respectively, as reported by WTKR, a local CBS affiliate.
The officers attempted to stop a blue Hyundai Sonata with expired license plates at 11:27 p.m. on South Rosemont Road, but the vehicle “failed to yield,” according to Neudigate. They pursued the car until it came to a halt at a dead end on Sylvan Court.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the male driver initially “refused to exit,” Neudigate noted. “Eventually, he complied with the requests, exited the vehicle, and almost immediately engaged in a struggle with the officers,” he explained.
During this altercation, the driver drew a pistol from his pocket and shot both officers. Neudigate confirmed that the officers did not discharge their weapons at the suspect. “The officers fell to the ground,” he stated. While they were vulnerable on the ground, “he shot them a second time.”
The incident was recorded on body cameras and in-car cameras, Neudigate reported. “From the video, I can tell you that after he executed our officers, he calmly walked away.”
Emergency responders and other police officers attempted to provide lifesaving assistance upon their arrival. Officer Reese was pronounced dead at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital shortly after midnight, Neudigate indicated. Officer Girvin was also pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
