A person has reportedly passed away after jumping Newport bridge on Thursday, May 9. The victim who was identified a white male came out of a dark colored SUV, he was reportedly in a hoodie. Multiple law enforcement agencies are at the scene. According to other information gather the victim was a Rogers high school student, and the son of a teacher. Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain released the following statement:
“Dear Newport Public Schools Staff, Families, and Community, Last evening we had an unimaginable loss to our student body and Viking Community.
Mental health teams, guidance staff, and additional personnel are at RHS to provide support to our students and staff as we navigate this unexpected tragedy. Please know your children’s health and wellbeing are our number one priority.
Our hearts and condolences go out to the family during this very difficult time.
Please keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers.”
There has only been one survivor from suicide on that bridge and there are about 10 on average a year. The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority is in charge of operating the Claiborne Pell Bridge, which is often frequently referred to as the Newport Bridge. This suspension bridge is located in Rhode Island and spans the East Passage of the Narragansett Bay.
