Nell Smith Flaming Lips Obituary, Death: The Canadian adolescent music prodigy Nell Smith, who was most known for her collaborations with the Flaming Lips, has passed away. In a post on Instagram today, Simon Raymonde, a member of the Cocteau Twins, made the announcement that Smith had passed away.
Raymonde’s label, Bella Union, is planning to release Smith’s maiden solo album the following year. Prior to her passing, Smith was residing in the province of British Columbia. A cause of death has not been disclosed at this time. Smith was 17 years old.
She was born in the United Kingdom, although her family relocated to Canada at some time during her youth, as stated in a Kickstarter campaign that was started by Smith’s father. When Smith was no more than ten or eleven years old, she and her family went to see Flaming Lips perform in 2018, and it was there that they became acquainted with Wayne Coyne.
She was planned to record with the Lips in Oklahoma before the epidemic began, and Coyne remained in contact with her throughout the process. Smith was learning to play the guitar and writing her own songs at the same time. Rather than working together in person, they worked remotely on an album of cover songs created by Nick Cave called Where The Viaduct Looms. Cave and Warren Ellis both enthusiastically supported the record.
