CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man has died after being struck while riding a moped in Uptown Charlotte, officials say.
On Friday, Mar. 14, officers responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a moped in the 600 block of Graham Street around 11:53 p.m.
When the crews arrived, the officers located a moped and its rider in the roadway with serious injuries. There was also a Dodge Charger with damage to the passenger side at the scene.
Medic pronounced the moped rider, Leon Willis, 59, dead at the scene.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and DWI Task Force began investigating the incident. The preliminary investigation indicated that the moped was headed north on Graham Street when the Charger, driven by Briona Jackson, 33, turned left into the path of the moped.
Jackson was not injured in the crash.
Officials say speed and impairment do not appear to have contributed to the crash at this time.
Willis’s next of kin have been notified of his death.
The crash remains under investigation.
