KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – One person suffered minor injuries and six people have been displaced following a large house fire in Kannapolis, authorities announced.
The Kannapolis Fire Department responded to the late Wednesday night fire at a commercial automotive garage attached to a two-story home along West 9th Street.
As emergency crews arrived, firefighters saw smoke coming from the garage, though it was soon determined that the fire started from within the house. Fire crews entered the home to fight the flames and search for any potential victims.
As conditions inside worsened, additional help was called in. With the threat of collapse becoming more apparent, the incident commander declared a “Code Red,” pulling firefighters from inside the structure for their safety. Despite this, crews continued to battle the blaze from the outside, working to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring homes.
The Kannapolis Fire Department was supported by firefighters from Atwell, Landis, China Grove, and Salisbury departments, while Concord, Locke, Coldwater, and Odell Fire Departments assisted with coverage. Other agencies on the scene included Kannapolis Police, Rowan EMS, Rowan County Rescue Squad, and the American Red Cross.
One person sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Thankfully, no other injuries were reported.
Six people have been displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross is assisting.
An investigation into the cause of the house fire is ongoing.
