The Attorney General’s Office identified the deceased as Miles Dignean. He was shot at a residence at 34 Cook Rd. in the Town of Constantia.
On the afternoon of March 21, Oswego County Deputies and the New York State Police responded to the address around noon following a 911 call regarding a welfare check and to serve Dignean with an order of protection.
The Sheriff’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office reported that Dignean, during a “struggle,” swung a metal object at a State Trooper and hit them in the head. This caused the trooper to suffer a minor injury that required them to be taken to a Syracuse hospital.
The struggles continued, prompting a deputy to fire their weapon at Dignean. He was struck by the gunfire and taken to the hospital. He was pronounced dead around 2:30 p.m. that day. After his death, a cardboard sign close to the road where the incident happened read, “The cops just killed my son” in red letters.
The Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation is now assessing the matter per New York State law. The office investigates all shootings in which a civilian dies and a member of law enforcement is involved.
