Michael G. “Mike” Johnson, Death – A beloved father, husband, and lifelong resident of Manhattan Beach, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with lung cancer, surrounded by his wife and daughters. Mike was known for his friendly nature, his love for family, and his daily walks through the community where his kind spirit touched all who met him.
Born to Roy and Dolores Johnson, Mike grew up alongside his older brother Patrick and younger sister Susan in Manhattan Beach, where his story of a “wonderful life” began. He attended Grandview Elementary for kindergarten and American Martyrs School from 1st through 8th grade, where he made lifelong friends. A standout athlete, he later attended Mira Costa High School, graduating in 1961. Mike’s infectious zest for life and fun-loving personality made him a cherished friend and community member.
After high school, Mike joined the Army and served in the Army Reserves until June 1968. He began his professional career in the aerospace industry, where he worked for over 15 years. In 1977, he transitioned to real estate and property management, a career he continued to enjoy.
An early marriage blessed Mike with his first three children, Jeannine, Jeffrey, and Jennifer. In 1984, he married Thais, and their family expanded with the births of Matthew and Megan. As a loving and involved father, Mike coached his children’s sports teams, volunteered at their schools, and supported their passions. His family and faith were always his top priorities.
In addition to his love of Manhattan Beach, Mike had a passion for travel, visiting over 25 countries. One of his favorite volunteer activities was assisting travelers at LAX. He was known for his humor and ability to tell captivating stories, most of which were true. His optimism and steady presence brought comfort to all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and adventure.
Mike is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Thais; daughters Jeannine (Ryan) McDougle, Jennifer Spengler, and Megan Johnson; brother Pat (DeAnne) Johnson; sister Susan O’Connor; 10 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was a beloved brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to many. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sons Matthew (2000) and Jeffrey (2015).
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, October 5, at 11:00 AM at American Martyrs Church in Manhattan Beach, where Mike was baptized and remained an active parishioner throughout his life. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City on Monday, October 7. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Martyrs Church in Mike’s memory
