Michael Allen Stroup Jr. Obituary, Phelan man killed in ATV accident along Highway; Authorities have identified the victim of a tragic collision on Highway 138 as 20-year-old Michael Allen Stroup Jr. of Phelan. The incident occurred last week, resulting in his death shortly after the collision, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Stroup was riding a 1994 Honda ATV, attempting to cross Highway 138 in a southwest direction between Rancho Del La Garto and Kruse Drive, an unincorporated county area just south of Phelan. At the time of the collision, a 2024 Nissan Rogue, traveling eastbound at approximately 70 mph, struck Stroup’s ATV. The CHP officials reported that the driver of the SUV, a 46-year-old woman from San Jose, applied her brakes and veered to the right in an attempt to avoid the collision but was unable to do so.
“As the ATV entered the No. 1 lane of SR-138 eastbound, the SUV driver applied the brakes and turned to the right in an attempt to avoid a crash, but was unable to do so,” the statement read. Stroup was thrown from the ATV upon impact.
Emergency responders transported Stroup to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene, according to officials.
The collision remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
