Mia Dieguez Death – The incident report from the police details the efforts made by first responders to save the life of a 15-year-old student from Dunwoody High School who tragically passed away after a medical emergency at school. The student involved in the incident was identified as Mia Dieguez. An individual under the age of 18 has been arrested and is now facing charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct in connection with Dieguez’s death.
Upon arriving at the classroom where Dieguez was found “unconscious and not breathing,” school resource officers and nurses had already used an automated external defibrillator (AED). The first responding officer from the Dunwoody Police Department then proceeded to perform CPR after failing to detect a pulse from Dieguez’s wrist.
The officer administered three rounds of chest compressions before DeKalb County Fire Rescue personnel arrived to take over life-saving measures. The incident report also mentions that school staff had given two doses of Narcan as a precaution due to the suspicion of drugs being involved in the emergency.
According to the report, the teacher in the classroom informed the officer that Dieguez had appeared unwell and fatigued when she arrived for class. The teacher noted that it was not uncommon for Dieguez to fall asleep during class, and on that day, she had rested her head on her desk.
After requesting to go to the nurse’s office for water, Dieguez returned to a different desk and continued to rest her head for the remainder of the class. It was only when other students tried to wake her up and noticed her lack of response, skin discoloration, and absence of breathing that the seriousness of the situation became apparent.
Despite being rushed to Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital of Atlanta, Dieguez’s life could not be saved, as hospital staff’s efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.
