Officer Joseph McKinney was shot on April 12, 2024, at around 2:10 am, while responding to a report of a suspicious car. He later died from his wounds (Memphis). At the scene, two more officers sustained injuries.
One of the injured officers received on-the-spot treatment before being sent to Regional One Hospital.
Officer Joseph, who was 26 years old, was a living example of bravery and commitment, and his memory will always encourage other officers to serve and defend their communities with dignity.
In February 2020, he began working for the Memphis Police Department. After completing the Training Academy, he was posted to Mount Moriah Station in July 2020. Following his probationary period, he was moved to Raines Station and given the Alpha Shift assignment.
He leaves behind an MPD family that will persevere in honoring his memory as well as a loving family that will mourn him terribly.
