Mark Garay Death – Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies have provided details of a vehicle on Tuesday as they persist in their efforts to locate a hit-and-run driver responsible for the death of a 16-year-old boy on a bicycle the previous week. The incident occurred after midnight on Thursday near the 5100 block of North State Road 7 in North Lauderdale, to the west of Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, according to deputies. The victim was identified as Mark Garay; his sorrowful mother informed Local 10 News that he was on his way home from work at the time.
A news release from BSO indicates that the suspect was driving an older model white sedan with tinted windows, potentially a Ford Crown Victoria or a Mercury Grand Marquis. On Tuesday, authorities shared a photo of a similar vehicle.
“Investigators have determined that the white sedan swerved into the bike lane and collided with Garay, who was propelled to the right and off the side of the road, where he remained for about an hour before being discovered,” stated BSO spokesperson Claudinne Caro in the release. “As per investigators, the individual in the vehicle fled the area heading northbound, then executed a U-turn and drove past the scene heading southbound.”
Individuals with any information are urged to contact BSO Traffic Homicide Unit Detective Sean Strzalkowski at 954-321-4845 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
As per BSO, informants may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
