Who was Marion Simpson?
Born on December 1, 1935, Marion Simpson (nee Henderson) grew up in North London and was an exceptional athlete, winning track and field events and earning a spot on the 1952 Olympic team after impressing at trials.
She excelled academically, serving as valedictorian at both Ryerson Public School and Central High School, and later became a teacher, admired by her students.
Marion married Don Simpson, a fellow teacher, and raised four children while supporting their individual passions. She was particularly proud of her daughter Christine, a pioneering female sports broadcaster, and her sons Dave and Craig, who played professional hockey.
Marion was also a poet, artist, and lifelong learner, taking courses at Western’s Society for Learning in Retirement. Her values were rooted in kindness, non-judgment, and generosity, as she actively supported various charitable causes and welcomed people from all walks of life.
