Authorities in Louisiana are on high alert as a manhunt is underway for four inmates who escaped from the Tangipahoa Parish Jail, located just north of New Orleans. The dramatic escape, involving three individuals suspected of homicide and one convicted of violent crimes, has sparked a statewide search.
According to Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards, the prisoners made their escape during yard time, exploiting a vulnerability in the outer fence of the jail. Sheriff Edwards explained that a section of the fence was compromised, allowing the inmates to slip through. “The inspection revealed a part of the fence was vulnerable and easily maneuvered so that a small-statured body could slide through,” Edwards stated.
The escapees include Travon Johnson, 21, and Omarion Hookfin, 19, both from Natalbany, Louisiana, and Avery Guidry, 19, from Hammond, Louisiana. All three are suspects in a 2022 homicide case in Hammond. The fourth escapee, Jamarcus Cyprian, 20, of Amity, Louisiana, was serving time for armed robbery and firearms offenses and had additional charges for aggravated violence while incarcerated in Catahoula Parish.
The brazen breakout has put local communities on edge and mobilized law enforcement agencies across the state. Sheriff Edwards emphasized the danger these individuals pose to the public and urged residents to remain vigilant. “These individuals are considered extremely dangerous. We are working tirelessly to bring them back into custody and ensure the safety of our community,” he said.
Local, state, and federal authorities are collaborating in the search effort, employing tactics ranging from ground patrols to aerial surveillance. Checkpoints have been established on major highways, and the public is asked to report suspicious activity.
Residents in the areas surrounding Tangipahoa Parish have been advised to take precautions, such as securing their homes and vehicles, and to immediately contact law enforcement if they spot any escapees or notice anything unusual. The sheriff’s office has released photos and descriptions of the four men to aid in their capture.
The escape has also prompted a review of security protocols at the Tangipahoa Parish Jail. Officials are assessing the vulnerabilities that led to the escape and implementing measures to prevent future incidents. Sheriff Edwards acknowledged the need for a thorough investigation into how the security breach occurred and what could be done to enhance the facility’s defenses.
As the search continues, the community’s cooperation and alertness are crucial in ensuring these dangerous fugitives are apprehended quickly. The sheriff’s office has set up a tip line and is offering a reward for information leading to the capture of the escapees. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office or local law enforcement immediately.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by correctional facilities and the importance of robust security measures to prevent escapes and protect the public. As authorities work around the clock to recapture the fugitives, the community’s support and vigilance remain vital in bringing this dangerous situation to a swift and safe conclusion.
