LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A woman who was shot earlier this week by an armed man died from her injuries Thursday, just three days after a 6-year-old boy died from his injuries, following a violent encounter that ended with police fatally shooting the suspect.
Lancaster County authorities continue to investigate the deadly officer-involved shooting that occurred along Mosteller Drive on Sunday, March 9.
The incident has claimed the lives of a 6-year-old boy and a 44-year-old woman, both of whom were critically injured. The child, whose name has not been released, was confirmed dead on March 10. The woman, Christina McVay, 44, passed away from her injuries on March 13.
The suspect, Jacob Tyler Sobieraj, 24, died in a shootout with law enforcement officers following a standoff. Sobieraj had reportedly called 911 to confess to the shooting, claiming responsibility for the deaths of both the child and woman. Both victims were rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries at that time before both passing away.
Sobieraj, who authorities confirmed did not have any prior criminal history in South Carolina, died during the confrontation with Lancaster County deputies.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is leading the investigation. Authorities have not disclosed details about the suspect’s relationship to the victims or a possible motive.
