Khamani Hicks Obituary, Death; – District of Columbia police reported that four individuals were fatally shot on Tuesday, coinciding with a rise in homicides in the city early this year.
According to the Metropolitan Police, the first incident occurred shortly after midnight in Northwest, while the last shooting took place around 7:30 p.m., resulting in the death of a 17-year-old boy in Southeast.
Data from the MPD indicates that there have been 18 homicides in the capital this year, an increase from 11 at the same time in 2024. Assistant Chief LaShay Makal, who supervises patrols in Southeast, Capitol Hill, and parts of downtown, stated on Tuesday regarding the shootings, “We are working diligently to put the pieces together. What we can tell you is that there’s no connection between any of these cases.”
The shooting that claimed the life of the 17-year-old in the 3500 block of Sixth Street Southeast also resulted in a 16-year-old boy being hospitalized with gunshot injuries. Police have not provided any updates on the condition of the injured teen. Chief Makal mentioned that officers are searching for a male dressed entirely in dark clothing who was last seen fleeing the scene.
Another shooting occurred around 5:15 p.m. in a Navy Yard apartment building. The MPD reported that officers discovered a man with gunshot wounds inside the complex located on the 1000 block of First Street Southeast, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Chief Makal confirmed that an individual has been taken into custody in connection with this incident, noting, “That case was isolated indoors, it was domestic in nature, and detectives have made an arrest in that case.”
Earlier, at approximately 8:30 a.m., police responded to the 1300 block of Congress Street Southeast following reports of an unconscious individual. Authorities located 19-year-old Khamani Hicks from Rockville, Maryland, at the scene, where he was pronounced dead after emergency personnel were unable to revive him.
The first fatal shooting of the day was reported when police responded to gunfire on the 3100 block of 16th Street Northwest. Officers arrived to find E’Zell Hill, 22, from Northeast, lying unconscious on the ground with apparent gunshot wounds.
