Kelly Johnson of Sulphur, Oklahoma, Dies In Fatal Tornado Outbreak
Tornadoes ravaged Oklahoma, claiming the lives of four individuals and leaving thousands without power on Sunday, following a destructive onslaught of severe weather that obliterated structures in the heart of a rural town and left at least 100 individuals injured throughout the state.
More than 20,000 residents grappled with power outages as tornadoes descended late Saturday night. The town of Sulphur, with a population of roughly 5,000, bore the brunt of the devastation, where a tornado decimated numerous downtown edifices, hurled vehicles and buses, and tore roofs off homes spanning a 15-block area.
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt, while surveying the hard-hit town, expressed disbelief at the scale of destruction, noting the near-total annihilation of downtown businesses.
Approximately 30 individuals sustained injuries in Sulphur alone, including patrons caught in a bar during the tornado’s wrath.
Statewide, hospitals reported around 100 injuries, primarily from debris-related lacerations or falls, as per the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management.
The fatalities in Oklahoma compounded the havoc wrought by dozens of tornadoes across the nation’s midsection since Friday.
In Iowa, reports indicated that a man injured during a tornado in the town of Minden on Friday succumbed to his injuries.
