Kathleen Burnett Obituary, Death; – A woman from Singer, who tragically perished in a camper fire while attempting to stay warm, has been identified.
Kathleen Burnett, aged 60, lived alone and lost her life on Wednesday following a winter storm that swept through Southwest Louisiana. The Beauregard Parish Fire District 1 responded to the incident at her camper located on Charlie Davis Road around noon.
Investigations by deputy fire marshals revealed that the fire was caused by unsafe heating practices, which included the use of a wood-burning stove and a chimenea inside the camper. It was also noted that the camper lacked functional smoke alarms.
Burnett marked the 15th fire-related fatality in Louisiana for the year, occurring just 22 days into 2025. In contrast, the same period last year recorded only one fire-related death, as reported by the State Fire Marshal’s Office. State Fire Marshal Bryan Adams provided several safety tips for heating homes effectively.
When utilizing a space heater, it is crucial to plug it directly into a wall outlet rather than using an extension cord or power strip, and to maintain a distance of 3 to 5 feet from flammable items such as blankets and furniture. Avoid using ovens or stoves for heating purposes, and ensure that any open flames, including those from fireplaces and candles, are never left unattended.
The state’s Operation Save-A-Life initiative offers free smoke alarm installations for Louisiana residents in need. To apply, individuals can reach out to their local fire department or register online.
