Judy Mae Hughes Obituary-Death News; Founding Member Of Tearmann Society, Judy Mae Hughes Passes Away
Judy Mae Hughes, a former chair of the board of directors, a founding member of the Tearmann Society, and a staff member have regrettably died away. On May 3, 2024, she passed away.
A social media publication declared her deceased, saying, “Judy passed away peacefully at home.” Paul Thorne, her cherished companion and soulmate of 42 years, is leaving her behind. We do not yet know the circumstances surrounding her demise.
Judy Mae Hughes, who was born on March 3, 1949, achieved success in a wide range of pursuits. She traveled to Africa and the Kalahari Desert with Crossroads International while she was a university student. Throughout her life, she never wavered in her dedication to the growth of communities and the well-being of women.
Apart from being a trailblazer in the domain, she also made a noteworthy contribution to the creation of resources for women and kids, such the Tearmann House transition home in New Glasgow (which she established alongside Karen O’Hara and Kathy MacKay).
Judy was the provincial coordinator for the Transition House Association of Nova Scotia (THANS) as well as the original organizer of the Nova Scotia Family Violence Prevention Initiative.
She traveled across Canada as a member of the Status of Women’s National Panel for Violence against Women in order to take part in its activities. Judy never went by the rules; instead, she lived life to the fullest and to the beat of her own distinct drummer. Judy’s siblings, Jim, Gary, and Brenda, together with their families, are the only people who will remember her.
Not only that, but her brother Owen, sister Aileen (Hughes) Brown, parents Chris and Jim Hughes, and nephew Sean all died before her. Judy is loved and cared for by her extended family, which consists of her nieces and nephews, relatives, and devoted friends, as well as her godchildren, Jona Lynn Currie, Cait, Laura Jean, and Becca Banks.
We would like to express our profound gratitude to the VON/CCA and the Palliative Care Unit at Aberdeen Hospital for their kind treatment of Judy. There won’t be a service soon. We kindly request that you register as an organ donor rather than making a financial contribution. The R.H. Porter Funeral Home in New Glasgow is in charge of making the required preparations.
