Josh Maravich Death, Son of LSU basketball Star Pete Maravich has died: Former LSU men’s basketball player Josh Maravich passed away on Friday at the family home in Covington, as announced by the LSU athletic department on Saturday. He was 42 years old.
Josh Maravich was the younger son of the legendary LSU and NBA star “Pistol” Pete Maravich. He proudly followed in his father’s footsteps, playing for the LSU Tigers from 2001 to 2005 under Coach John Brady. Playing in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, the arena named after his iconic father, was a dream fulfilled for Josh. “I wanted to come here for my dad to make him proud,” Josh said in a 2005 interview with The Daily Reveille. “I knew I wasn’t going to be a star player, but for me being a walk-on (it) was what I always wanted to do.”
Josh’s basketball journey began at St. Paul’s in Covington, where he excelled in high school basketball. He scored over 1,000 points in his three-year career and was named district MVP as a senior, averaging 18 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals per game.
In July 2022, Josh participated in the ceremonies to unveil the long-awaited statue of his father on the plaza outside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Along with his older brother, Jaeson, Josh helped decide on the iconic pose for the statue, which depicts Pete in full fastbreak mode, throwing a right-handed, behind-the-back pass—a fitting tribute to the all-time leading scorer in men’s college basketball. This statue stands alongside other LSU legends such as Bob Pettit, Shaquille O’Neal, and Seimone Augustus.
Josh Maravich, born less than six years before his father passed away in January 1988, is survived by his mother, Jackie Maravich McLachlan, and his brother, Jaeson. His legacy continues through his family and the countless lives he touched during his time at LSU and beyond.
