He was the fifth of eight children and the son of Irish immigrants. He moved through the ranks of Maine politics with dedication and humility, winning the respect and admiration of his contemporaries as well as the citizens he represented. During the course of his distinguished career in public service, which lasted fifty years, Brennan served in a variety of capacities, including those of state lawmaker and county attorney, Attorney General, Member of Congress, Federal Maritime Commissioner, and eventually, Maine’s 70th Governor.
During his time as governor of Maine, which lasted from 1979 until 1987, Brennan had a profound comprehension of the challenges that the state was experiencing and worked relentlessly to find solutions to those challenges.
