Jose Portillo Obituary, Death; – A woman has been charged in connection with the death of a superintendent in Queens, who was reportedly killed while attempting to collect overdue rent.
Sandra Coto Navarro, aged 48, faces charges of murder, tampering with physical evidence, and criminal possession of a weapon related to this incident. Additionally, a man identified as the registered tenant is currently under police questioning.
Authorities suspect that the superintendent, identified as 55-year-old Jose Portillo, was fatally struck on the head during the assault. Initially, two persons of interest were taken into custody on Wednesday after police discovered the body of a man wrapped in two garbage bags and concealed under a bed during a welfare check at an apartment in Kew Gardens Hills.
The community is reeling from the shocking and tragic news. “I greeted him every day because he lived right next door, and he was the person I turned to whenever I needed assistance in the apartment,” remarked one neighbor. Many residents have known him for years and relied on his support.
“I spoke to him just yesterday. He went down to check on the boiler, and he always greeted me. ‘Hello, Mrs. Sanks. How are you?’” said Rosemarie Sanks. “He’s a very nice guy. He’s my superintendent. He’s genuinely helpful whenever we need something. He takes care of everything,” added Jasmine Halili.
