John Darrel Schultz Obituary, Death; – A 53-year-old man named John Darrel Schultz from Kempner was involved in a serious incident yesterday afternoon when he drove his truck into a department store in Killeen, located approximately 110 kilometers north of Austin, the state capital. According to Sergeant Bryan Washko of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Schultz continued his path into the building, colliding with individuals as he advanced.
Emergency medical services responded by transporting four victims from the mall to nearby hospitals, while another individual made their way to a hospital independently. The ages of the victims ranged from six to 75 years, and their medical conditions were not immediately disclosed, as stated by Washko.
The pursuit commenced around 5 PM on Interstate 14 in Belton, roughly 30 kilometers from Killeen, following reports of a reckless driver operating a black pickup truck, as reported by Ofelia Miramontez of the Killeen Police Department.
Schultz subsequently exited the roadway and entered the mall’s parking lot. “The suspect drove through the entrance and continued into the JCPenney store, hitting several individuals,” Washko explained. “The trooper and a Killeen police officer pursued the vehicle on foot as it drove through the store, actively running over people. He traveled several hundred yards.”
Officers from the state public safety department, Killeen, and three additional law enforcement agencies “engaged in gunfire to neutralize this threat,” Washko noted. One of the officers involved in the exchange of gunfire was serving as a security guard at the mall, while others were off duty.
Witnesses interviewed by local news organizations outside the mall reported hearing multiple gunshots and observed individuals fleeing the premises.
