FERN PARK, Fla. — A woman informed police that her 41-year-old live-in boyfriend, David Jackson, had gotten into a dispute with her 22-year-old nephew, Joel Ferrer, before their arrival. A 911 caller said, “I think there was just a shooting in my apartment complex.” Someone says, “I heard gunshots, I heard screaming, and now I’m looking around.” On Thursday night, police in Casselberry responded to a call about a killing at the Goldelm at Regency Oaks Apartments.Casselberry police say they were dispatched to a gunfire complaint about 11 p.m. Jackson has become the victim. According to Deputy Police Chief Derrick Becton, “a second call came in, with someone yelling, ‘he’s dead,’ ‘he’s dead,’ and ‘he’s dead,’” suggesting that the victim had already been discovered. The victim “had been shot multiple times, he was rushed to ORMC where they were performing emergency surgery and unfortunately he did not survive, he died in surgery,” Becton said. To the sounds coming from the bathroom, police believe the victim reacted because he had recently lost a loved one to gun violence.Becton concluded that the man was “playing with the firearm,” as it sounded like he was “cycling the action” by moving the slide back and forth. The gun was reportedly in Ferrer’s possession, according to the police. Jackson’s fiancee has a nephew named him. Because of his strong feelings, he entered the bathroom where Joel was handling the gun and confronted him. Becton stated, “This led to an argument.”According to the police report, Jackson attempted to defuse the situation by taking both men outside to discuss their differences. Becton stated, “We don’t know exaclty what transpired yet, but Joel turned around and fired approximately eight shots and hit David.” A local resident was quoted as saying, “I know people have a right to carry, but some people just don’t need guns.” An anonymous neighbor expressed concern about his children’s security. The neighbor expressed concern about raising their children in a community with high rates of gun violence and generalized crime. Ferrer fled the scene, and the weapon was not located. Becton warned that anyone interacting with the suspect should use “extreme caution” since “he is still considered to be armed and dangerous.” Ferrer is wanted by the police for second-degree murder.
