On Friday night, a somber cloud descended over Lake Mohegan as 42-year-old Jennifer Proeschel was fatally struck in a hit-and-run incident on Route 6. The tragedy occurred around 8 p.m. when Proeschel was crossing the road at Mohegan Avenue, only to be hit by a vehicle described by authorities as speeding away from the scene.
Yorktown Police Chief Robert Noble confirmed the details of the incident, noting that emergency services, including the Mohegan Lake Fire Department and paramedics from both Putnam and Westchester counties, responded promptly. Despite their efforts to provide immediate medical assistance, Proeschel was rushed to Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Peekskill-Cortlandt where she was pronounced dead.
The aftermath of this tragic event saw a rapid mobilization of law enforcement resources. Yorktown Police, aided by the State Police, Westchester County Police Department, and the Westchester Real-Time Crime Center, initiated an urgent investigation to find the perpetrator. Their efforts paid off when they successfully traced the vehicle to Jake Barak, a 24-year-old from Cortlandt Manor, close to the Putnam County line.
Barak was apprehended at his home where the suspected vehicle was located. Facing grave charges including vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, speeding, and improper lane usage, Barak was arraigned and subsequently held at the Westchester County Jail.
