Jeffrey Kanas Accident: U.S. Customs and Border Protection Pilot, Jeffrey Kanas Died in Tragic Plane Accident
It is with great sadness that we report the tragic passing of U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air Interdiction Agent Jeffrey Kanas, who lost his life in a helicopter crash on Monday, December 16, 2024. The accident occurred in a remote area of southeastern San Diego County while Kanas was performing his duties as part of a border security operation. He was 16 years into his dedicated service with CBP, and his sudden death has left his colleagues, family, and friends mourning the loss of a man known for his bravery and commitment to his work.
Jeffrey Kanas was the sole occupant of the Euro copter AS350 when the helicopter went down at approximately 10:15 a.m. in Potrero, near Barrett Lake and just north of State Route 94. The exact circumstances of the crash remain unclear, and federal and state authorities are continuing their investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the effort to determine what caused the helicopter to crash. As of now, no immediate conclusions have been reached, but the CBP has confirmed that Kanas was actively engaged in a border-security mission at the time of the accident.
Kanas’ tragic passing was confirmed by CBP spokesperson Geraldine Alcordo, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a highly respected agent. “Jeffrey Kanas was a dedicated and courageous agent who committed his life to serving his country and protecting its borders,” said Alcordo. “His untimely death is a loss not only to his family and loved ones but to the entire Customs and Border Protection community.”
