Jayden Stephenson Obituary, Death; – The individual who lost his life in an officer-involved shooting in Miami Township on Wednesday has been named. Jayden Stephenson, aged 21, was identified on Thursday by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.
As previously detailed, law enforcement responded to a disturbance in the 9200 block of Sawgrass Drive, located near PipeStone Golf Club, on Wednesday afternoon. Acting Police Chief James McCarty stated on Thursday that a woman had contacted 911, reporting that her son was threatening family members with a knife.
Within minutes of the 911 call, six officers arrived at the residence. They ensured the safety of the family members outside and attempted to persuade Stephenson to relinquish the knife.
According to a report from News Center 7 at 5:00, the officers spent seven minutes attempting to de-escalate the situation, urging Stephenson to drop the knife 29 times. When he failed to comply, the officers resorted to less lethal measures, including a taser and a beanbag shotgun, in an effort to subdue him.
Despite these efforts, McCarty indicated that Stephenson did not drop the knife and began advancing toward the officers while still armed. At that moment, one or more officers discharged their firearms. As previously mentioned, the gunfire triggered a county-wide request for assistance from law enforcement, which was subsequently rescinded.
Officers attempted to administer life-saving measures, but Stephenson was pronounced dead at the scene. Initially, a township spokesperson indicated that an officer had sustained injuries during the incident; however, McCarty clarified in a brief press conference on Thursday that no officers were harmed.
Five of the six officers present during the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been called in to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Prior to the press conference on Thursday, police informed media representatives that they would not be addressing questions, and they declined to respond when inquiries were made.
