Javeoin Gills Obituary, Death; – A former football player from Merrillville High School was fatally shot near Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting during the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to a statement from Hammond Police spokesman Lt. Steve Kellogg, officers were dispatched around 3:30 a.m. to a residence in the 2300 block of New York Avenue following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered a deceased young man and another individual who had suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound; the latter was transported to a nearby hospital for medical care, Kellogg reported.
The Lake County Coroner’s office identified the victim as 19-year-old Javeoin Gills, residing on Polo Club Drive, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, as noted in a release on Saturday evening.
As of now, law enforcement has not identified any suspects, Kellogg stated. The Hammond Police Department is conducting an active investigation into the matter.
