Jasper White Obituary-Death News; Legendary Boston Restauranteur, Jasper White Passes Away
Jasper White, a chef from New Jersey who wrote several manuals and was an expert in the cuisine of his adopted New England, went yesterday at the age of 69. Renowned for his contributions to New England cuisine, he entered the Boston culinary scene in 1983 when he opened Jasper’s Restaurant, which was located on the harbor.
He opened Cambridge’s Jasper White’s Summer Shack in 2000. He then grew the business to include Mohegan Sun in Connecticut and Back Bay. His hallmark dishes, like as roasted lobster, brought New England cuisine to a new level. White has authored four cookbooks as well.
According to an online biography from the Culinary Institute of America, from which White graduated in 1976, White and Shire directed the kitchens of numerous famous Boston hotels, including the Copley Plaza, the Parker House, and the Bostonian, before founding their first restaurant in 1979.
White, who was born in New Jersey in 1954, has worked in Montana, New York, Florida, California, Washington state, and New York before moving to Boston, the institution claims.
After a successful twelve years, White shuttered Jasper’s Restaurant on the Boston harbor in 1995 because of concerns about the possible detrimental effects of the ten-year Big Dig project on the establishment. Five years ago, after he had published two cookbooks, he opened the first Summer Shack in Cambridge, near the Alewife MBTA station.
With his new restaurant, White took a different approach, moving away from the upscale environment of Jasper’s and toward a cozier, family-friendly setting. White wanted to give city dwellers a taste of a classic New England clam shack with Summer Shack. The Lyons Group has been managing the restaurant since his departure in 2017.
The organization claims that White was inducted into both the MenuMasters Hall of Fame and the Massachusetts Restaurant Association Hall of Fame, among many other distinctions, during his tenure.
The James Beard Foundation announced that Summer Shack had won the prestigious James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in 2001.Softly murmur Jasper White
