James Myers Obituary, Death – On September 9, 2023, the world lost a true American hero, James Robert “Jim” Myers III, at the age of 80. Jim’s life was marked by service, dedication, and a profound love for his family. Born on March 27, 1943, to the late James Robert Myers, Jr. and Geneva Hall Myers, Jim’s journey was one of remarkable commitment.
Jim’s legacy is deeply intertwined with his 22 years of service in the United States Navy, where he retired as an E8 Senior Chief Petty Officer. His naval career took him to remarkable places, and he proudly served on submarines, including the USS Grenadier (SS-525). His accomplishments in the Navy were a testament to his unwavering dedication and expertise.
In addition to his military service, Jim was a cherished member of Liberty Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, where his faith played a significant role in his life. He was also an active member of two submarine groups, the Tarheel Base Submarine Group and the Nathaniel Greene Submarine Group, where he fostered lifelong friendships and shared his experiences.
Beyond his military and community involvement, Jim had a passion for woodworking and cherished moments spent with his family. He was known for his playful banter with his beloved wife, Libby Myers, with whom he shared 42 wonderful years of marriage.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Rhonda Street. He is survived by his wife, Libby Myers, and their children, Randy (Rebecca) Myers and Rene’ (Jeff) Armstrong, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also remembered by his sisters, Louise Simmons and Pat Simmons, and his brother, Sam (Patsy) Myers.
As we bid farewell to this brave Cold War Submarine Veteran, let us remember Jim’s remarkable contributions and the love he shared with his family. His legacy will forever live on, and his memory will be a source of inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
