James Edward Montenegro Obituary, Death; – The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has released the identity of the individual who was fatally injured in Coachella on Monday, along with the suspect believed to be responsible for the incident.
Deputies responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 51-000 block of Calle Empalme at approximately 10:15 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered James Edward Montenegro, 34, from Coachella, deceased at the scene, exhibiting “traumatic injuries.”
The suspect has been identified as Mario Gonzalez, 44, also from Coachella. He was located shortly thereafter inside a nearby trailer, where he remained until authorities were able to negotiate with him for several hours, according to the sheriff’s department.
Gonzalez has been booked into the John Benoit Detention Center on charges of murder, as stated by the sheriff’s department. He is scheduled to appear at the Larson Justice Center in Indio at 8 a.m. on Thursday, with no bail amount currently set, according to jail records.
The sheriff’s department has not disclosed the circumstances surrounding Montenegro’s death or the type of weapon, if any, that was involved.
