OLATHE, Kan. — Because the judge is currently working under the influence of COVID-19, the preliminary hearing in the felony case involving Jackson Mahomes, who is the brother of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has been delayed by over a month. In May, Jackson Mahomes was arrested on four felony counts of aggravated sexual battery and one misdemeanor offence of battery. The misdemeanor count of battery was the lesser of the two charges. On February 25, he is accused of forcibly kissing a woman in the office of a restaurant in Overland Park, Kansas, that she owned at the time. The restaurant was owned by her at the time.
The hearing had been planned to take place on Thursday at first. According to a story from the Kansas City Star, Judge Thomas Sutherland of the Johnson County District Court disclosed on Monday that he is afflicted with COVID-19 and could not guarantee that he would be well enough by Thursday at a scheduling conference held over Zoom. The hearing has been rescheduled for the 24th of October.
During the preliminary hearing, the prosecutor will likely present an overview of the state’s case, and the court will almost certainly hear testimony from various witnesses. Jackson Mahomes has entered a plea of not guilty to the accusations against him and is currently free on a bond of $100,000. Since then, the alleged wrongdoer, Aspen Vaughn, has shut down the eatery. She claimed that the publicity that was linked with the case was detrimental to her company.
