Two people lost their lives, and another was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon at an intersection near Bonham in Fannin County.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the crash occurred around 4:29 p.m. when the driver of a GMC Sierra failed to properly yield at the intersection of Highway 121 and Farm-to-Market Road 1629, colliding with a Dodge Ram pickup truck.
A passenger in the GMC, identified as 82-year-old Jackie Dewoody of Mesquite, was transported to Texoma Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The 58-year-old Bonham man driving the GMC was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 16-year-old driver of the Dodge was severely injured and airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
In 2022, motor vehicle crashes in Texas resulted in 4,408 fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal, emphasized that factors such as road conditions, visibility, and lighting are taken into account during crash investigations. “An accident reconstruction team is sometimes necessary to determine exactly what happened. These resources are crucial in helping clients seek financial compensation for damages or losses after a collision,” she explained.
Depending on the investigation’s findings, Jackie Dewoody’s family may consider filing a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims may pursue compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following such tragic incidents.
Bond, a national legal analyst for Newsline, noted that families dealing with the loss of a loved one can feel overwhelmed by legal proceedings. “An attorney can provide compassionate guidance and ensure that the surviving family members receive the restitution they deserve,” she said.
While no financial settlement can truly compensate for such a devastating loss, Bond added that legal assistance can help alleviate financial burdens and offer a path forward.
