PROVO, Utah (ABC4) — Provo Fire Department officials said that an investigation is underway regarding a fireworks accident that resulted in multiple injuries at the Stadium of Fire event on July 4.
At around 8:45 p.m. on July 4, Provo Fire & Rescue and Brigham Young University Emergency Medical Services responded to “injuries related to fireworks” at the Stadium of Fire in Provo.
The annual Independence Day celebration at Brigham Young University’s LaVell Edwards Stadium was delayed after several fireworks went into the crowd during the flag ceremony at the beginning of the event, officials said. Video posted on social media showed the stray fireworks spiral into the crowd during the jet flyover.
After the incident, viewers witnessed a small fire in the stands where the fireworks were launched from, and the fire was later extinguished.
According to initial reports, six people were taken to the hospital after the incident. Fire officials said they are offering their concern for those injured at the event.
Provo Fire & Rescue is reportedly investigating the incident. The Provo Fire Department will issue further comments once the investigation is completed.
“Our emergency operations center is state-of-the-art allowing us to practice and train in scenarios such as this,” said Lynn Schofield, Provo City Fire Marshal. “We never want an incident such as this to happen, but we prepare by planning and coordinating with Brigham Young University so that if it does, we ensure a timely, effective response.”
