Hunter Balberdi,Abriauna Hoffman Obituary, Death;- An individual from Arizona, who admitted guilt in a 2022 incident involving a wrong-way collision that resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a woman from Maui, has received his sentence.
Vincent Ian Acosta, aged 27, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison, with credit for time already served, as stated by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. The incident occurred shortly before 4 a.m. on October 10, 2022, when Acosta collided with three other vehicles while driving against traffic in the northbound lanes of Interstate 17 near New River.
Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while a third succumbed to injuries at a hospital. The deceased have been identified as follows:
– Hunter Balberdi, 19, from Wailuku, HI
– Abriauna Hoffman, 18, from Clarkston, WA
– Magdalyn (Maggie) Ogden, 18, from Clarkston, WA
Court documents reviewed by Hawaii News Now’s affiliate, Arizona’s Family, revealed that Acosta’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.129, exceeding Arizona’s legal limit of 0.08. Balberdi was a recent graduate of Baldwin High School and a pre-med student at Grand Canyon University. Hoffman and Ogden were her roommates.
In August, Acosta pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree murder. His plea agreement outlined a possible sentence ranging from 18 to 22 years for each charge, to be served concurrently. Additionally, his driving privileges will be revoked, as reported by AZ Family.
