MIDLAND, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Cabarrus County officials say human remains found Dec. 23 likely belong to a man missing since May.
The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office has reported that 80-year-old Calvin Knotts walked away from his Midland residence on May 31, and a Missing Endangered Alert was issued. Efforts included ground searches on foot, deployment of tracking K9 units, drones, helicopters, and land search teams equipped with specialty utility vehicles.
Deputies say that despite exhaustive efforts and a thorough investigation of all leads, Knotts was not located in the following days and weeks. On Dec. 23, the sheriff’s office reportedly responded to a report from a hunter on Jim Sossoman Road, near Knotts’ residence, who had discovered what appeared to be human remains.
Detectives and crime scene investigators confirmed the remains were human. Evidence at the scene, including clothing matching that of Knotts, suggested the remains might belong to him, and the family was notified of this likelihood.
The Medical Examiner’s Office later made a positive identification and is working to determine the cause of death. At this time, investigators do not suspect foul play or criminal activity was involved.
