Hubert Thomas Death: The Canton community is mourning the loss of Hubert Thomas, a beloved and influential figure who passed away at the age of 75. Known for his unwavering kindness and numerous contributions, especially to the youth, Thomas left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him.
For Billy McDowell, Thomas was more than just a community member; he was a father figure. “Hubert’s been my call since I was seven, eight years old. I got my driver’s license in his car,” McDowell recalled. “My first pair of Converse sneakers, he bought.” This sentiment echoes the deep and personal impact Thomas had on many young lives in Canton.
Thomas was a self-taught handyman, a reliable go-to person for anything and everything. His skills and generosity made him a cornerstone of the Gibsontown community, home to the former all-Black Reynolds High School. His ability to connect with people transcended all backgrounds and races, embodying a spirit of inclusiveness and love.
“You just enjoyed his company and his presence,” said John Miller, another friend. “He just lit it up when he came around.” This radiant personality and genuine warmth made Thomas a cherished friend to many.
Canton Mayor Zeb Smathers expressed profound admiration for Thomas, recognizing him as one of the best people to emerge from Haywood County. “Hubert had this natural ability to love and to listen and to mentor — especially to young men and women who may not have had a stable household,” Smathers said. “I know nobody [else] who had a natural gift through love to just really make an influence on how we treat each other.”
Thomas’s legacy is one of love, mentorship, and community service. His natural gift for making people feel valued and understood will be remembered and celebrated. As Canton reflects on his life, his example of compassion and generosity will continue to inspire future generations.
Hubert Thomas’s impact on Canton and its residents is immeasurable. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched, serving as a beacon of kindness and community spirit.
