A six run sixth inning propelled the Hickory Crawdads to a dominating 9-2 win at Winston-Salem on Wednesday. All nine batters got to the plate in the sixth inning and produced two singles, a double, a home run and were issued two walks. Meanwhile the Crawdads pitching staff limited Winston-Salem to only four hits and struck out nine batters.
Winston-Salem took the first lead of the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning. A one out triple was followed later by a wild pitch that allowed the run to score.
From that point on, it was all Crawdads. Hickory tied the game in the fifth inning. Sebastian Walcott doubled to open the inning. He would advance to third on a Luis Mieses ground out, and then scored when Ian Moller ground out.
Yosy Galan singled to start the sixth inning. Jayce Easley doubled putting a pair of runners in scoring position. Alejandro Osuna was walked to load the bases. Cameron Cauley was walked, allowing Galan to score. That was enough for Winston-Salem to make a pitching substitution, however, Yeison Morrobel flew out to left field, but the sacrifice allowed Easley to tag up and score. Walcott singled scoring Osuna and putting Cauley on second. They all came home when Luis Mieses hit his first home run as a Crawdads after being sent to Hickory as part of a rehab assignment on Friday, May 24th.
The Crawdads tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh inning. With one out, Easley singled to center field. One out later, Cauley tripled allowing Easley to score. After Morrobel walked, a pitching change saw Walcott hit a single to left field allowing Cauley to score.
A solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning finished off the scoring as Hickory won 9-2.
Ryan Lobus, who was called up by the ‘Dads on May 14th from the Down East Wood Ducks, pitched six innings, allowing only three hits and one run while striking out seven and walking none. He gave way to DJ Peters who pitched two innings and did not allow a run, while walking three and striking out one. Yohanse Morel finished off the ninth inning, allowing the home run, but struck out one.
The Crawdads are 19-28 on the first half of the season. They will continue to play at Winston-Salem the rest of the week.
