Hailing from Reidsville, N.C., he was born to Paul Walker of Virginia and Hazel “Christine” Keller of Lititz. Regarded as one of the esteemed symbols of Lititz, Walker was famed for his mischievous grin, his friendly waves to passing vehicles along Main and Broad streets. For numerous decades, Walker managed his own solo lawn mowing business within the town. He dutifully tended to people’s lawns during their vacations, often refusing payment for his labor of love dedicated to lush greenery.
His cherished Troy-Bilt lawnmower became a familiar sight as he pushed it along sidewalks and through the tranquil landscapes of Lititz Springs Park. Walker’s distinction lay in his knack for striking up regular conversations with longstanding Lititz residents.
He possessed an uncanny memory for obscure details about individuals’ families and connections, even if he occasionally struggled with recalling their names. Additionally, he had a penchant for spinning tales, recounting anecdotes like his tussle with Victor, a 450-pound bear at the former Tastee-Freez in Lititz, or his ventures into BMX bike racing during the 1980s. Surviving are his nieces, Sandy Cook, Crystal Walker, Tonya Snyder, Sheena Farver, and Cayli Getz, and his nephews, Dale Miller, Justin Thomas, and Austin Walker.
Haywood Walker Obituary
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Teresa Walker and Vickie Getz, and his brother, Randy Walker. A viewing will take place on Friday, Sept. 1 from 1-2 p.m. at Stradling Funeral Home, 30 N. 9th St., Akron. A graveside service will follow at Mt. Zion United Methodist Cemetery, 105 N. 11th St., Akron. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Haywood’s name to the Lititz Fire Company.
