Haleei A. Newton Died : Ruston High School Graduate Killed In Drive By Shooting On I-20: RUSTON, Louisiana On Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 12:20 AM, a drive-by shooting took place on Interstate 20 between the Tech Drive interchange and the Tarbutton overpass, killing an 18-year-old lady from Ruston who had just graduated from high school.
Haleei A. Newton and a friend were traveling east on the highway when her 2009 Kia was hit by multiple gunshots, according to the Ruston Daily Leader. Steve Rogers, the chief of police in Ruston, said that one of the bullets got inside the trunk and hit Newton. Police have not yet identified a suspect as of May 28, 2024.
Police also said the male passenger was uninjured and steered the car off the road. According to authorities, officers on routine patrol north of I-20 heard the shots. According to authorities, Newton and the male had been to Arcadia, La. before the shooting, but investigators have not confirmed a connection between the Arcadia visit and the shooting.
