Death Notice – Namibia is in mourning as President Hage Geingob, aged 82, has passed away at Lady Pohamba Hospital in the capital, Windhoek. The sad news was confirmed by Acting President Nangolo Mbumba in a statement posted on the presidency’s X account, formerly known as Twitter.
President Geingob, who had been battling cancer, breathed his last just after midnight on Sunday, surrounded by his wife Monica Geingos and children. Despite a valiant effort by his medical team, Geingob succumbed to the illness. The President had recently returned from the United States, where he underwent a two-day treatment as part of a medical trial.
As the nation absorbs this profound loss, Mbumba has urged the citizens to remain calm while the government makes state arrangements. Cabinet meetings have been convened to address the necessary preparations.
A statesman of remarkable tenure, Geingob served as Namibia’s first prime minister from 1990 to 2002 and assumed the presidency in 2015, currently in his second term. His contributions to the nation, especially during the formative years post-independence, will be remembered with gratitude. Namibia bids farewell to a leader who dedicated his life to public service and shaping the country’s destiny.
