Grace Wellman Obituary, Death; – A woman who lost her life in a collision involving a recreational vehicle on Tuesday along Interstate 95 in the Pee Dee region has been identified by the coroner.
According to LCpl. Lena Butler of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 11 a.m. near mile marker 164, when a 2002 Ford Explorer collided with the RV while both vehicles were traveling southbound.
Emergency crews from West Florence Fire Rescue reported that the RV subsequently caught fire, although the flames were eventually extinguished. Personnel from the Windy Hill Fire Department also arrived at the scene to assist.
Butler noted that a passenger in the RV succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash, while the driver remained unharmed. The driver of the Ford Explorer was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken later confirmed the identity of the deceased passenger as 79-year-old Grace Wellman from Virginia Beach, Virginia. West Florence Fire Rescue indicated that the RV driver, along with his two dogs, was taken to a local hotel where accommodations were arranged for him.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently conducting an investigation into the incident.
