George Colom Jr,Jonathan Mark Schaffer Obituary, Death; – A chef at a restaurant in the capital city of North Carolina, who is suspected by authorities of fatally shooting a colleague before turning the gun on himself, has succumbed to his injuries, as announced by police on Sunday.
George Colom Jr., 34, who held the position of executive chef at Coquette Brasserie, had been in critical condition at a local hospital following the shootings that occurred on Friday morning within the establishment. Police confirmed Colom’s identity in their announcement of his passing. Another individual, described by authorities as a bystander who sustained injuries during the incident, received treatment and was subsequently released from the hospital.
According to police, the shootings appeared to have arisen from a dispute. They indicated on Sunday that “further information will be provided at the appropriate time.” Jonathan Aguilar Vega, the Coquette employee who was injured, recounted to WRAL-TV that he still has a bullet lodged in his hand.
“We were engaged in our daily meeting prior to the start of the shift. One of our staff members had brought in a cake to celebrate a bartender’s birthday. As she was cutting the cake, I was shot,” Vega, referred to as Aguilar by the station, stated. He added that “there was no animosity or personal grievances against Colom from anyone present.”
The deceased shooting victim was identified by police as Jonathan Mark Schaffer, 26. His LinkedIn profile indicates that he had several years of experience in the restaurant industry, most recently with Urban Food Group, the parent company of Coquette.
“He was just a kind and beautiful soul,” remarked Katie Carrigan, reflecting on her late manager and friend. George Colom Sr., the father of the chef, issued a family statement on Saturday, expressing his anticipation of his son’s impending death and his sorrow for the victims of the shooting.
“My son will soon pass away, and we simply wish to lay him to rest in peace. We will not be addressing any further questions or comments,” the statement read. The shootings, which took place in North Hills, a well-frequented shopping and dining area in north Raleigh, caused significant traffic disruptions during midday on Friday as police conducted their investigation.
