A graduate of Computer Science at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities has tragically died. Gabriel “Gabe” Mersy was an alum of Washburn High School. He was a resident of Illinois and an Undergraduate Researcher at the University of Minnesota.
Gabe passed away unexpectedly leaving his family, friends, and dear partner Izabella Raleigh devastated. Until his death, Gabriel Gabe Mersy was a PhD student in the ChiData group working with Sanjay Krishnan.
Gabe was a computer science PhD student in the ChiData group at The University of Chicago. He worked with Sanjay Krishnan. Gabe graduated from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. While there, he worked on computational social science, machine learning, and statistical sampling research.
Gabe was interested in the intersection between sustainable computing, data systems, and machine learning. Broadly, His last research focused on developing systems that track and reduce carbon emissions throughout the life cycle of data. He also worked on approximation techniques with error guarantees, such as lossy compression and probabilistic data structures.
